Slide 1 — Singapore Weather & Flying SINGAPORE WEATHER AND ITS EFFECTS ON FLYING Understanding tropical convection, monsoons, rainfall and wind hazards Visual: Full-screen satellite/radar image of Singapore with a large thunderstorm system approaching. Small subtitle: A pilot-focused aviation meteorology briefing Slide 2 — Scope & Objectives WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT 🌏 WEATHER ENVIRONMENT Equatorial location Tropical temperatures High atmospheric moisture Monsoon regimes Local wind patterns ⛈️ WEATHER SYSTEMS Thunderstorms Sea-breeze convection Sumatra squalls Monsoon surges Heavy rainfall 🌬️ AVIATION HAZARDS Wind shear Microbursts Gust fronts Turbulence Lightning Reduced visibility Wet runways 🛰️ WEATHER INFORMATION METAR / SPECI TAF SIGMET Radar Satellite Wind / significant-weather charts Objective: Understand what creates Singapore's weather, recognise how it evolves, and understand what it means for flight operations. Slide 3 — Singapore's Climate HOT. HUMID. WET. CONVECTIVE. Singapore's location near the Equator creates a warm, moisture-rich environment throughout the year. Typical characteristics 🌡️ Warm temperatures Little seasonal temperature variation compared with temperate climates. 💧 High humidity Large amounts of atmospheric moisture provide fuel for convection. 🌧️ Frequent rainfall Rain occurs throughout the year, although its pattern varies by season. ⛈️ Frequent thunderstorms Convection is one of the defining features of Singapore's weather. 🌬️ Seasonally changing winds Monsoon flow influences the background wind regime. Big picture HEAT + MOISTURE + INSTABILITY + LIFT ↓ ⛈️ CONVECTION Visual: Singapore climate graphic with temperature, humidity, rain and thunderstorm icons. Slide 4 — Why Does Singapore Get So Much Convection? THE INGREDIENTS FOR A THUNDERSTORM ① MOISTURE Warm tropical air holds substantial water vapour. ↓ ② HEATING Solar heating warms the surface. ↓ ③ INSTABILITY Warm/moist air near the surface can become buoyant. ↓ ④ LIFT Air is forced upward by: Sea-breeze convergence Surface heating Monsoon flow Convergence zones Existing storms ↓ ⛈️ DEEP CONVECTION Pilot perspective The important question isn't simply: "Is there rain?" It is: "Are the ingredients present for deep convection?" Visual: Atmospheric vertical cross-section showing warm moist air rising into a CB. Slide 5 — The Monsoon Calendar SINGAPORE'S WEATHER CHANGES THROUGH THE YEAR DEC — MAR 🔵 NORTHEAST MONSOON NE winds Monsoon surges Widespread rain Longer-duration wet periods APR — MAY 🟡 INTER-MONSOON Lighter / variable winds Strong surface heating Frequent thunderstorms Localised convection JUN — SEP 🟠 SOUTHWEST MONSOON SW background flow Sumatra squalls Morning thunderstorms Regional smoke/haze can occasionally affect visibility OCT — NOV 🟡 INTER-MONSOON Variable winds Strong convection Frequent thunderstorms Heavy showers Bottom line The same airport can experience very different weather mechanisms depending on the season. Slide 6 — Singapore Thunderstorms UNDERSTANDING THE CB STAGE 1 — DEVELOPING ☀️ Surface heating ⬆️ Rising warm air ⬆️ Growing cumulus STAGE 2 — MATURE ⛈️ Strong updrafts + Downdrafts + Heavy precipitation + Lightning Highest hazard potential STAGE 3 — DISSIPATING 🌧️ Downdraft dominates. Rain continues. Storm weakens. Pilot takeaway A storm can change rapidly from a developing cloud to a significant aviation hazard. Visual: Three-panel CB lifecycle diagram. Slide 7 — Sea-Breeze Convergence HOW LOCAL STORMS CAN DEVELOP During the day: 🌊 Sea → cooler air moves inland 🏙️ Land → surface heating These airflows can converge. CONVERGENCE ⬇️ AIR RISES ⬇️ CLOUD DEVELOPS ⬇️ ⛈️ THUNDERSTORM Why pilots care A relatively benign-looking morning can evolve into significant afternoon convection. The location of storms is not necessarily fixed; the convergence zone can shift. Visual Top-down Singapore map: SEA → → → LAND LAND ← ← ← SEA with convergence highlighted over Singapore. Slide 8 — Sumatra Squalls THE REGIONAL THUNDERSTORM SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT SUMATRA ⛈️ ⛈️ ⛈️ ↓ STRAIT OF MALACCA ➡️➡️➡️ ↓ SINGAPORE Characteristics Organised line of convection Often associated with the Southwest Monsoon Can occur during the pre-dawn / morning period Moves eastward Heavy rain Lightning Strong gusts Significant wind changes The key difference Local storm: Can develop relatively close to Singapore. Sumatra squall: A regional system that can be tracked approaching Singapore. Pilot question "Where is the squall line, and what is its movement?" Slide 9 — Heavy Rainfall RAIN IS A WEATHER SYSTEM, NOT JUST A VISIBILITY NUMBER Heavy tropical rainfall can produce: 🌧️ Very high rainfall rates ↓ 👁️ Rapid visibility reduction ↓ 🛬 More challenging approach environment ↓ 💦 Water on runway ↓ 🛑 Changed braking considerations But look beyond the rain itself Heavy rain can indicate nearby deep convection, which may also mean: Lightning Gusts Wind shear Turbulence Rapidly changing winds Visual Large photograph of tropical rain viewed from an aircraft cockpit. Overlay: RAIN RATE ↑ VISIBILITY ↓ Slide 10 — Wind, Gusts & Wind Shear THE WIND CAN CHANGE FASTER THAN THE FORECAST Background wind Monsoon flow provides the large-scale wind environment. But thunderstorms can create: UPDRAFTS ⬆️ DOWNDRAFTS ⬇️ GUST FRONTS ↔️ WIND SHIFT ↪️ WIND SHEAR Microburst A strong downdraft reaches the surface and spreads outward. This can produce: HEADWIND → DOWNDRAFT → TAILWIND Pilot relevance Particularly important during: TAKEOFF + APPROACH + LANDING Slide 11 — Reading Singapore's Weather Picture ONE PRODUCT IS NEVER THE WHOLE STORY Create a six-part cockpit dashboard: METAR What's happening now? TAF What's expected? RADAR Where is the precipitation? SATELLITE Where is cloud developing? SIGMET Where are significant hazards? WINDS / SIGWX What's happening beyond the airport? The pilot's synthesis NOW → NEXT → TREND → IMPACT Don't simply collect weather information. Build a weather picture. Slide 12 — What Does the Weather Mean for a Pilot? FROM METEOROLOGY → OPERATION DEPARTURE ⛈️ Nearby CB → Departure routing → Ground delay → Wind shear considerations EN ROUTE ⛈️ Convective line → Deviation → Extra distance → Fuel implications → Turbulence avoidance ARRIVAL ⛈️ Storm near WSSS → Vectoring → Holding → Approach changes → Go-around / diversion considerations Key concept Weather affects the options available to the pilot. Slide 13 — Weather Decision-Making FLY THE WEATHER, NOT THE PLAN BEFORE FLIGHT What is the weather regime? ↓ Where is the convection? ↓ How is it moving? ↓ Is it building or weakening? ↓ What are the wind hazards? ↓ What options do I retain? FINAL TAKEAWAY 🌏 Understand the weather ⛈️ Recognise the hazard 🛰️ Monitor the trend ✈️ Protect your options ANTICIPATION IS THE PILOT'S FIRST WEATHER TOOL Visual design for the final PowerPoint I'd make this version considerably more visual than the previous deck: 60–70% imagery/diagrams 30–40% text Dark navy background Satellite/radar imagery as major slide elements Large weather icons Animated-looking arrows for storm movement CB cross-sections Singapore regional maps Wind-vector diagrams A consistent “Pilot takeaway” box on weather-heavy slides The narrative would now be: Singapore's climate → why convection happens → when it happens → what the major weather systems look like → how storms evolve → how to interpret the weather → what it means in the cockpit. That puts weather at the centre of the presentation, with aviation serving as the practical application rather than the other way around.
Presentation overview
This community presentation was shared by johnwinters34@protonmail.com as a complete 13-slide example. Slide 1 — Singapore Weather & Flying SINGAPORE WEATHER AND ITS EFFECTS ON FLYING Understanding tropical convection, monsoons, rainfall and wind hazards Visual: Full-screen satel… The preview lets you review the full sequence in order, rather than judging the design from a single cover image.
Use it as a reference for planning your own deck: notice how the amount of information changes from slide to slide, where visual emphasis appears, and how repeated design choices help the presentation feel connected. Community examples are inspiration, not locked templates, so you can keep the ideas that fit your audience and replace anything that does not.
Learn from the example
Look at the job each slide performs. Identify where the deck introduces its subject, develops the main points, adds evidence or examples, and moves toward a conclusion.
Notice which element attracts attention first and how headings, supporting text, images, and data are separated. Strong hierarchy makes the intended reading order obvious.
Compare spacing, typography, color, and repeated components across the slides. Consistent rules help varied content feel like one presentation instead of unrelated screens.
Make it your own
Begin with your audience and the decision, lesson, or action the presentation should support. Replace the topic, examples, evidence, and visuals with material you can verify, then edit every slide for one clear takeaway. You can borrow the visual direction without copying the creator's wording or message. Presenton will use this community deck as a design reference while you develop content for your own purpose.
